The Day KIAMS was Born!

The day KIAMS was born…. I wonder how was that day, was the sun bright in the sky or did it hide behind the thunderous clouds, was there a breeze that hugged its turns and corners or was there a beckoning silence that called forth. What can I say of all the things that would have happened that day! I may not have been present on that auspicious day but I know one thing for sure that I did feel every joy and every sense of belongingness that might have flown through the hearts of people who were present on that day and who had witnessed the birth of something that would touch the hearts of so many and would inspire them.

It was the auspicious 25th day of November 2010 that Kirloskar Institute of Advanced Management Studies celebrated its 20th Foundation Day. This day marks the beginning of the new era in management, this day marks the beginning of the modern day Channakya or we may say Channakya in the new avatar. This day highlights the history of KIAMS, each classroom whether it is LH1 or LH2 or the mighty triangle or the fun filled Rotunda speaks the history behind it! On this special day, the KIAMS remembers all its B’s, feels proud of their achievements, hence this day continues to bring back memories of joy and thrill.

This Year, the function began at 10:00hrs with invocation by Miss Aarthi Mohan of class 2011(Batch 12). The melodious voice of Aarthi ignited every nook and corner of the auditorium, thereby providing the great beginning for this special day. The chief guest for the function was Dr. S. Indumati, Vice Chancellor of Davangere University. At 10:05hrs the lamp was lighted by the Director Dr. Gopal Iyengar, Dy Director Air Cmde Krishna Shankar and the chief guest followed by a welcome address by the director. After that, Wg. Cdr A. Raghunath Vr. C took us back to 1990 and enlightened us with the great history behind this prestigious institute. At 10:15hrs Dr. Janaki Naik, Director KIAMS Pune, addressed the students through video conferencing. After this Dr. Indumati- Chief guest for the occasion addressed the students. Dr. Indumati delivered a wonderful speech with some great advices for the managers of tomorrow. On the occasion of Foundation Day, Mr.Yuvaraj was awarded MBA. The chief guest also appreciated Ms. Alka Agrawal, Topper in PGDM Class of 2011 with a CGPA of 3.82 (out of 4) and Mr. Sohom Bhattacharya, Topper in summer internship Project (A+ 98/100). After the award ceremony, the function continued with the seminars by some eminent personalities. There were seminars on “Work life Balance” by Dr. Moushumi Sengupta and “Essentials of Recruitment” by Dr. V. Lele through video conferencing. After the seminar Wg. Cdr. A. Raghunath presented mementos to the seminar speakers followed by a thanks giving speech by DD sir. Ms Jayalakshmi D/o Dr Gopi sang the Kirloskar song. At 13:00hrs the traditional Foundation day lunch was served in the triangle. With this the function officially came to an end and the day continued to experience the unfelt memories and the Love untold at KIAMS, for KIAMS, Of KIAMS!!

Life Now . . .

With lots of dreams, I left my home,

For the miles that I had to walk alone,

Smile on my lips, that was unknown,

Tears in my eyes were hardly shown..

With butterflies in my stomach flying high,

I stepped at the portals of KIAMS, and took a deep sigh,

I wanted to relax, but failed to even try,

To the past life of mine, I then, said good bye…

With lots of rays in the eyes,

The sun of hope began to rise,

The thought of winning the world then revives,

But the fear of losing myself at once strikes…

Friendship now becomes an operational plan,

I am confused if it is the dawn,

Love somehow remains a strategic plan,

I do not know what conclusion is to be drawn…

But, still I have a new life geared up to start,

Life is never ending and all this is a just a part…

The dream comes true & I live it again

“Pure relations always return.”

I wrote this line for my recent ad assignment on a brand. The root for the thought was my affection for the place where I spent two most incredible years of my life – Kiams.

Never ever was I so excited for getting back to a place in my whole life, be it my home or even girlfriend’s houseJ.

What I had was a fine-looking thread of memories; what I could have was to relive them all over again. That’s the thought that took me that far (an 18 hr train journey, all alone), and believe me, the feeling was so..o..o strong that I spent entire journey thinking about how the next 18 hrs in college were gonna be. I’ll meet them, will talk to them, will shout in madness, will play on the ground again, will be in rotunda again, and will meet new members of Kiams and Blah... Blah… Blah… Couldn’t sleep until 4am; I think I went crazy that time.

Same autowals asking for 30 bucks (from station to kiams) as if I were new there, passing through those coconut shops, circle, MKL, all made me keep smiling, don’t know why. A new face was there at the gate, and that too smoking khulle-aam. Thought of saying something (giving some gyaan) to that guy but then just ignored, reason being my restlessness for getting in the campus asap and meet my best buddies without any delay. I knew my time was running by and I wanted to enjoy every bit of it.

Kasam se kahta hu, had never imagined that kind of reception from my loved ones (all B12 girls & boys, honestly). It was lovely. You guys made my day, my trip and my life. Indeed, it was a life for me that I lived in those few hrs and I wished ye (18 hrs ki) life thodi si aur badi hoti with all the love and emotions making it pleasurable, memorable, incredible and joyful…… You rock (both B12 and all of those from B13, who I was lucky to interact with)!!!

The new batch seemed cool, though only few of them tried to interact. But those who interacted with us left an impression and if sample were the true representation of the original set, the whole batch might be good. Another truth that I felt was negative vibes of Ego & Attitude. That is there with every batch initially but it goes away with the time as interaction sessions come to an end. It never happened this year. I hope that you guys (B13) also feel and understand the sense of belongingness and intimacy among yourselves as well as with kiams, seniors and your extended family members (us). Just to tell how many guys I remember from the new batch, here goes the names that I could remember (hope I’ve spelled them right) – Prateek, Raunak, Mradul, Praveen, Umesh (the stunt riderJ), Mishra Ji (MJ), Abhishek, Swati, Kusha, Sandhya, Iksha (2nd Arsh), Anupama, Sethulakshmi. Yaar aadhe din me issey jyada nahi yaad kar sakta, aur wo bhi bus ek mulkaat meJ. Many of them I remember coz they are now in my online friends list. (Out of sight, out of mind☻)

I stayed in my same old room # 246. I felt good when I came to know that Raunak, Prateek & Mradul from B13 have kept my room alive. The way Manish, Sameer, Vishal, Ankush and I used to discuss stuffs (u know!!) during initial days, it really felt strong and alive this time too (as it was a start for those three too). While sleeping on my same old bed I felt as if Manish would come and jump over me to wake me up and would say, “Saale tu so raha hai!! Yaha meri lagi huii hai. Kuch bata na bhaii kya karu……. Saala janta hu k kuch nahi ho sakta, par ssaala jab wo baar-2 ………… to fir se wahi sab sochne lagta hu.” Ankush and I would laugh like anything and then we all will tell him do this, do that and blah-blah. Vishal would share any damn thing that he used to bring to eat. And in that 3 hrs of sleep in my room on my bed I revisited all those beautiful little moments again. Woke up at 7 just to go for breakfast where I knew that I would get Ommlette, cornflakes, and pineapple juice (it was Sunday guys).

Don’t know how fast the time went by, and it was time to bid adieu once again. Still I had lots of things to do, I could not go for swimming, could not play squash, couldn’t go to gym, couldn’t shout and sing (hw could I with girls living on the ground floor of boy’s hostel and listening to every damn thing guys wud speak), could not walk in love-lane (I always wondered how it feels to walk down that lane with holding sm1 you loveJ), could not talk to lots of people with a relaxed mood with a cup of tea in hand. Unwillingly I picked my bag. I wanted to stay back but I didn’t, for what I repented later in the train. I don’t feel shy of saying that I cried this time too. The life was about to end, I was about to leave my loved ones, & my home. Metaphorically, I was gonna die in pain...

Luv u all… keep in touch…

P.S. - Luckily it’s friendship day yesterday….so, Happy Friendship day to u all…

KPL – KIAMS PREMIER LEAGUE!

KIAMS sports have taken a new dimension with the launch of KPL - The KIAMS PREMIER LEAGUE based on the lines of Indian Premier League.

The KPL is the professional T 10 cricket league created and promoted by the KIAMS SPORTS Reps including Sports Coordinator Mr. Bhuti Sir backed by the dynamic Management and students of KIAMS. The T 10 league debuted in June 2010, with Three teams comprising of 10 players each including 1 icon player. The league will last for 21 days during which overall of 7 matches will be played. The KPL is basically structured on the franchise system based on the American system of hiring players. The draw was held to select the team owners. The Three teams include:

The Dementors owned by Ms. Anju , Ms. Sirisha and Ms. Samyukta with Mr.Vinay Thakur being the Icon player. The official jersey color of the team is "RED".

The Lycans owned by Ms. Ishneet, Ms. Kriti and Ms. Ritika with Mr. Piyush being the Icon Player. The official jersey color of the team is "BLACK"

The Storm Riders owned by Ms. Pavneet with Mr. Amulya being the Icon Player. The official jersey color of the team is "BLUE"

The team owners and the respective icon players selected the other 9 players of the team through open auction. Each team had to choose their entire team within Rs. 500. The bidding process was much tensed moment as all the team owners were looking to bid for the best player keeping in mind the money constraint. It was definitely the money game with highest level of business thinking involved.

Finally after the bidding process each team came up with the Marketing Campaign for their respective teams. The College walls, the ground fencing and all the empty spaces were flooded with the team posters in order to get maximum supporters for the teams.

The storm riders with their two big wins are leading the points table followed by Lycans with 1 win and Dementors are yet to open their account. This is definitely not the end of the game as the game has just begun. . .

Live From Summer's,hyd.

Hi guys, hope everybody are going well with their sip’s and enjoying their stay.

Well I’m writing this letter to share my experiences during my sip.

And the situation was like this:

We were having hand full of big value orders and the work was going fine, but suddenly three of the workers formed a union & did many unethical things and also forced the remaining workers to quit their jobs.

And at this situation my dad thought to increase their salaries and bring them back to work. But I insisted not to do so, because few weeds in a crop can destroy it entirely, and we were managing the shop floor with few workers.

It’s easy for me to say no, but it is really hard for my dad to manage the project without the right skilled workers. We also gave an advertisement in the newspaper of the vacancies but that also did not go well.

And the situation was becoming tense as the delivery date is approaching and pressure from the client was also building up and we also have a construction project going on………….

My dad was having sleepless nights because of these problems, I can empathize his feelings. I was thinking what all I can do with my experiences, And me pursuing my MBA, never ever came across a case study like this or a solution where I can find a relevant answer in any of the books, I barely remember the subject names, but this is reality. In reality life hits you pretty hard…........

And I was remembering how I and saad beg(and many others) used to stick the posters of PRAGATHI 2010 around midnight from 12:00 am to 5:00am in the morning. Carrying a bucket full of glue in the main roads of Harihar where trucks used to travel at high speeds and we use to take the glue with bear hands and apply it to the posters and stick them to the dividers and to make this situation more worse there was power cut in the midnight we used the flashlight from the cell phone and carried on our work, and I was getting all kinds of thoughts like what am I doing in the middle of the night having glue all over my clothes and how this adds value to me and stuff like that.

I said to myself don't give up, don’t expect any appreciation for this work, and all your hard work could vanish within few days, but do it for your satisfaction and for the batch.

So from this experience I thought If I did it for pragathi then why not for my company & came up with an idea and took 100 printouts of (wanted so and so) and did things little differently like surveyed what are the big companies having CNC machines in an industrial estate then I have placed the posters In the sensitive areas where the employees of those big companies could easily see while they were on the way to home, and most of them use public transit so I had stuck up posters in all those places.

After this, by god’s grace lot of people have poured in for the vacancies and my dad is filtering people for the right job profile…….and he is feeling good about it.

And we have also given part of the project in the form of subcontracting and in the market you will be facing all kinds of people, but the real talent comes when we convince them & get the work done without any delays…………….this remembers me of the cultural during pragathi how divya prabhu, samyukta, nishta what pains did they take In convincing the bongale people………

And how ankit gupta used to mesmerize the shopkeepers, be it ramaprabhu, for operations and for prospecting, promotions, kaushik, robin, adhitya, manoj pandey, ashish, chaitra, vishnu…….and I wish I could write the entire batch names for their tremendous hard work……

Every day or the other I remember each and every person in the campus as the situations I come across, be it the advertisements that seniors do in ananth ram sir’s class, be it making a movie like the creative mind of vinay thakur, vishnu and be it a game, when I play badminton I think of how sangram and piyush used to play these shots, how would they smash it………..i never missed those memories.

And believe me guys I don’t know how great Billgates, Ratan tata are and were their strategies. I observe common people in and around me, like my father he may not be having a MBA degree but the dedication he has, the hard work he does, the way he plans things and the work pressure he controls it’s mind blowing and today’s managers cannot stand for it.

Different people are having different skill sets right from a pot maker to an entrepreneur, it doesn’t depend on what work they do but it depend on how tactically they would do it. We all have an opportunity to learn the best of how others can do things.

I initially hesitated to write this letter, thinking that how would students react, how would they think about it……….but there is a saying if you want to praise anybody do it in public….and I also thought if not now then when I would express my feelings to the batch.

So this is what I learnt from pragathi and implemented it. It might be a small thing what I did but made a big difference so once again thank you one and all and for the entire batch………….miss u all.

A Journey of 7.5 Months

The journey started with some unique ‘rotunda sessions’, convent like rules and useful or somewhat painful ( obviously not physical) tasks( sometimes weird also) . The journey experiences a halt today ( I wont say it is over) with love, emotion, admiration and tears.

The 1st station offered the buddy sessions, buddy dinners. Now, is the time to give some gifts with some mesmerising memories to you buddies.

The next station came with the initiation of the budding manager building course (the actual reason to board the train), getting tips, helps, suggestions, old papers, slides, assignments.

This journey sometimes changed the taste of some unpalatable foods. The midnight chats, the boys` night at boys hostel ( upss, I never witnessed it), a bit of romance, a lot of learning and guidance ………….. and two important junctions disguised in two memorable tour on the lap of the nature (Jog falls and Kemmanagundi).

Now, when you look behind, each of your co-passengers has already left or leaving shortly, the dining hall does not resonate with some familiar noise. There are lesser number of chairs in the triangle, the love lane does not experience the intimacy of few familiar couples. Firoz bhai has stopped credit sales, Raghu bhai prepares lesser number of plates of maggi everyday, Bhuti Sir observes an almost vacant volley ball court.

From now…….. the dance floor will shake itself with some new tunes ( it never got bored with ‘sutta’ or ‘pyaar hum e kis mor pe le aaya’ ), The recreation room will not vibrate with some familiar yelling, the culturals will miss one mesmerising singer, the man with always fine-tuned strings, few male Shakiras and female Prabhu Devas…..

Because your co-passengers have reached their destinations.

Life@triangle. . .

As i’ll leave this campus tonite, i realize that i will be passing by the triangle for the last time as a student, and this reminds me of various memories that i have attached to the triangle. In school i learned about triangle – a shape that is made up of three lines, that’s it, but when i came to KIAMS i learned new meaning which i would carry with me rest of my life. Here at KIAMS i learned Triangle KIAMS is the most happening place; there is always a hustle-bustle here, a place to hang out. Triangle has played different role in different occasions, becoming a dining room for us at 9.30am breakfast time, a place to gossip and a place to share entire day’s happenings at tea time at night. Triangle is our dance floor, it makes our evening rocking, a stage for all the parties, triangle also gives shelter to us when we don’t get GD rooms to study, we sit at triangle and make it our meeting room, our chamber. Triangle - a place to interact, share, have fun and learn, all in one... at triangle i have numerous memories attached to, it reminds me of our fresher’s party, where we rocked in the KIAMS for the very first time, the times when we sat every night at tea time and discussed everything, endless talking sessions...enjoyed them like anything, guitar nights are sure a memory that i will cherish, where batch gets together and sing their hearts out, studying at triangle in cold nights shivering and having hot coffee,,, will remember everything.... will miss everything.... for sure TRIANGLE Rocks.... !

Hats Off To All Our Seniors: Batch 11!!

Still remember the days when we used to have interaction sessions in Rotunda with Seniors. . .

The Time really passed fast, till now we used to be carefree. . . Now whom shall we give our SoS call at the time of exams... !!

The Memoirs Of 4 Researchers.

Pragati, the second most used word in the campus(Refer post #1), has moved up the list. This time around the students have founded another wing of Pragati for “Market research”. This wing works for companies which have untapped segments in the rural market by preparing questionnaires, carrying out the research and making the results available to the companies. Our MR imitative aims to leverage the demographics within which KIAMS is located. The clients this year include KBL,Dandekar’s and talks with companies like Colgate, Uninor are being finalized as I write.

The inaugural of the MR was done 4 days(10-feb) back when 4 students embarked on a journey to a rural with a back pack, a water bottle and a map, apiece. They embarked on the first survey to be conducted by this wing. The village was “Honnebagi” which was tugged away 10 odd Kms from the nearest taluka “Channagiri”.

(Switching over to first person narrative)

It was 8 in the morning. The four of us had assembled at the main gates of the campus after having gone to the temple to take Lord Hanuman’s blessings. We were going on a journey that we knew would be demanding, physically. In a unknown village ,under a hostile environment all we had at our aid was a group member who spoke kannada, Mr Abhayesh-An Andhra joker(Anathram sir Fans please appreciate!!)

20 mints later after having a hard time trying to figure out the appropriate mode of transportation we got onto a bus which the conductor claimed would take us directly into the villages of Karnataka. With a wide grin and a happy heart we flagged off our journey. 2 hours post sitting in a crammed up bus, with a child each in our laps, we were told we would be reaching our destination shortly. The definition of “Rural India” as I knew it was going to change forever!!

After a long and a tiring ride we finally got down at the bus-stand. To cut the long story short we finally reached the village,45 mints hence.(A dosa per person, A piping hot tea, A 6 Km walk, A Tractor lift and A short police inquiry happened in the interim) Our objective was to determine the farming practices of the villagers and the kinds of water pumps that were being used within that area. Our sample size was 50, which we were confident we would be able to cover.

On seeing us in the village some villagers were scared, some worried, some hostile, some inquisitive. We felt like foreigners in Timbuktu(Not quite, perhaps!) Within 30 mints of we landing in the village the news had spread like wild fire. The village being mainly inhabited by the minority community we found it reasonably easy to converse(Mr. Abhayesh, who was feeling very proud of his Kannada speaking skills throughout the journey, was considerably let down as the need-gap for him was growing with every passing moment)The initial 3 questionnaires took us around a hour to complete. This was because the people were wary of us and mistook us to be city dwellers who had come there with the motive of taking over their farm lands. A pen and a official looking paper in hand acted as a catalyst to their fears. As we conversed with one farmer, we were constantly surrounded by around 20 adults who were looking from over our shoulders, 10 children who were peeping from between our legs. We managed to convince them that taking over their farms was not our motive. After thorough interrogation from their side they did start to believe us. (We learnt a lot from their questioning too. How to ask two related questions at different time intervals and interpret answering discrepancies, was one of them. Our questionnaire modeling style was hence improved!!!)

We learnt about the conditions they were living in. Abject poverty, in accessible electricity, insufficient drinking and farming water were their primary concerns. They were ,in short,
Being denied the basic necessities of life. Almost the entire village used electric pumps. Electricity to run them was available only for around 6 hours a day at infrequent times. People had no food to eat, no water to drink, children had no schools to attend. They told us the primary reasons were a non-cooperative government, an uncaring panchayat and a un-educated village population. The purpose with which we had gone to the village had long taken a backseat. There are times when a goal is not everything. This was one of those times!!!

The learning curve came into effect as we learnt which villager to approach, how to approach and how many questions to ask. The questionnaire we had developed had some questions that were not at all applicable in case of the village. (Example :- Income and Education. People were not earning much and many of them were illiterate, Facts they were unwilling to reveal and sometimes even hostile.) We started neglecting such questions and were more concerned in determining how and what can be done to improve their conditions. With a heavy heart I have to admit that there is not much we can do unless we have strong finances. Government cannot be instigated to take any action as any instigation MAY lead to more promises. Promises is the last thing Honnebagi needs today! It cries for action.

By the end of the day we had managed to get only 25 questionnaires filled. But we were least concerned about that . As we started to head back to Harihar the memories held onto us. As we left people with hopeful eyes bid us farewell. There are probably a million villages out there with conditions worse than in Honnebagi. But it gives me no comfort. It only fuels my uneasiness.

As I finish writing this a child somewhere is crying. Not because he did not get his pizza, or because he broke his toy, or because the AC is not working. He cries for he is holding a rug, with an empty stomach, trying to sleep. But the damn mosquitoes refuse him that royalty!!!
